Toyota Europe: Embedding Agility in IT & Digital Culture Across the Continent

TOYOTA EUROPE

TOYOTA EUROPE

IT & Digital · European scope

The Initial Challenge

Within Toyota Motor Europe's IT & Digital department, agility was not a new concept — but its adoption remained uneven. Some teams applied Scrum mechanically, others still operated in traditional waterfall mode. An internal audit revealed that 66% of staff felt they needed additional training on product quality and agile management.

The challenge: make agility a performance lever embedded in the culture, not just a project management tool — across a program representing 50% of the automaker's IT & Digital budget in Europe.

Our Solution

Custom Product Management Framework — Design and deployment of a framework tailored to the Toyota context, structuring product delivery, business alignment, and continuous feedback mechanisms.

Quality Coaching Program — Following the diagnostic revealing the upskilling need, implementation of a training and coaching program covering Product Management, Scrum, Agile Leadership, and Facilitation for 150+ staff members (Product Owners, Scrum Masters, managers).

Kaizen & Root Cause Analysis — Facilitation of continuous improvement sessions inspired by the Toyota Production System, applied to digital delivery to reduce risks and improve project outcomes.

Community of Practice & Agile Cafés — Launch of regular collaborative webinars (Agile Café) to foster a culture of continuous learning and experimentation.

Toyota Europe Agile Camp (TEAC) — Co-organization of 3 out of 6 editions of this flagship event (Madrid, Brussels, Paris), featuring international keynote speakers, panels, and hands-on workshops averaging 90 participants.

Impact and Results

The approach transformed how agility was perceived within the department: from an imposed methodological framework, it became a value-creation lever driven by the teams themselves. The Toyota Europe Agile Camps became a cornerstone event for the internal agile community, strengthening best-practice sharing across the European organization.

The coaching program directly improved cross-team collaboration and product delivery performance. Kaizen sessions, by leveraging Toyota's continuous improvement DNA, created a natural bridge between the group's historical industrial culture and modern agile practices.

What made the difference is that agility was integrated into our Toyota DNA — Kaizen, continuous improvement — rather than applied as an external method. Our teams truly owned the approach.
